What we feed our dogsJ

We switched from Taste of the Wild to Purina One Lamb and Rice.  The older dogs are on the 7+ senior version and the younger dogs are on the regular one.  They seem to be doing great on it.  I noticed the Border Patrol is doing a whole lot better on dog food that has grain in it.  So we shall see.  I will keep everyone posted if I switch again or what we are planning on doing.

Well after a year on homemade - I have finally had to admit I was becoming obsessed with making the dog food:)  So I had to finally admit it was taking all my time and switch the dogs back over to dog chow.  We are going to try "The Taste of the Wild" High plains & Wetlands versions and see how the dogs do on it.  It is a grain free kibble that sounds promising.  So check back to see my opinion on it.

This stuff is awesome.  For the first time in a long time I have been able to put weight on my working Border Collies and they actually keep it on:)  Try it - the Borders love it and so do I.

"The Taste of the Wild"

My intact Border Collies get 20 - 24 ounces of meat mixture per day.  The altered Border Collies get 10-14 ounces of meat mixture per day. So we feed our intact dogs 3.5% to 4% body weight and our altered Border Collies get 2% to 2.5% body weight.   I always adjust as needed, so if someone is a little skinny I give more and if someone is a little heavy I give less.

Meat Mixture:  45% meat, 10% veggies, 45% grain

10 lbs of meat  - I cook this with the veggies and 8 cups of water and than food process or grind it to combine the meat and veggies.

10 lbs. rice / oatmeal - cooked

5 lbs. mixed veggies - cooked with the meat

1 ¼ C oil (I use veggie oil, since this works best for my dogs)

1 ¼ C unsulfured molasses

 Approximate yield: 25 lbs

I combine everything in a large bucket and split it into 1/2 day feedings and freeze.  This lasts me about three days and I have to make more:)

One the side the dogs are given 1/2 a multi-vitamin every day and either a Vitamin E or a Fish, Flaxseed, Borage oil pill every other day.  My bitches are given a prenatal vitamin instead of a regular one, since it contains folic acid. They also get a tablespoon of yogurt to help with digestion.

Satin Balls:

10 lbs ground beef chuck

Large box of Total Cereal

2 lbs. of oatmeal

1 large jar of wheat germ

1 ¼ C oil

1 ¼ C unsulfured molasses

10 hard boiled eggs w/ shells pureed

10 envelopes unflavored gelatin

¼ teas. Salt

Approximate yield: 17 lbs at 1275 calories / pound
